Your Will is one of the most important documents you will ever make

A Will is a legal document that puts you in control of what happens to your money, property and possessions upon your death. It is also the final bit of communication when you pass away and will allow you to clearly set out your wishes, and decide who’s responsible for dealing with your estate.

Whether you consider yourself to have many possessions or much money, it is still important to make a Will. View some of the reasons why you should have a Will in place.

No will means no say over what happens to your estate when you die

If you die without a will, UK law will dictate how your your money, possessions and property – collectively called your ‘estate’ will be distributed. This may not be the way that you would have wished.

Why do you need a Will?

There are many reasons why you should have a Will in place. Here are some of our top reasons.

You have dependant children

As well as providing for children financially after your death, if they're under 18 you should consider who would look after them by nominating a legal guardian or guardians in your will.

You aren't married to your partner

Partners who are unmarried and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a will in place. This may create serious financial problems for your other half.

You're worried about inheritance tax

If your estate is worth more than £350,000 it is liable for Inheritance Tax. Making arrangements in your Will and with our specialist advice can ensure you don’t pay any more than you need to.

Your personal circumstances change

Write or update your will when you marry, divorce or have kids to ensure the right people stand to benefit. Note that in England and Wales (but not Scotland) an existing will is automatically cancelled – 'revoked' – when you get married.

You have specific funeral wishes

You can set out what kind of funeral you would like and how you wish for that to be. You may prefer to be cremated or buried as well as the choice of music you would like to be played.

Avoid intestacy rules

f you die without a will, UK law will dictate how your your money, possessions and property will be distributed. This may not be the way that you would have wished.

To keep your family together

Having a will in place allows less room for family disputes over who should get what. Our 'Just To Let You Know' booklet was designed with this in mind, ensuring loved ones aren’t left without unanswered questions.

Protecting your digital assets

Alot of what we hold close to us today is kept and accessed digitally. Our photos, social media accounts and password protected documents. A Will can help protect these and give those with permission access to this.
